Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch: Caliber 3861 vs. 1861, The Buyer's Guide
Hacking seconds, Master Chronometer accuracy, Hesalite vs sapphire, and which to buy.
Chronometer precision in the new Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch
The current Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch (2021, present) runs the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 3861, which adds hacking seconds, anti-magnetic resistance (>15,000 gauss), METAS Master Chronometer certification (~0/+5 sec/day) and a 50-hour reserve. The outgoing Caliber 1861 is the hand-wound, non-hacking movement that powered the Moonwatch for decades. Both keep the 3Hz (21,600 vph) Speedmaster feel; the 3861 is the technical upgrade, the 1861 the more "vintage-pure" experience.

What actually changed
The 3861 shares the 1861's architecture but replaces around half the parts. The headline gains: the Co-Axial escapement (less friction, longer service intervals), Master Chronometer accuracy and magnetic resistance, and, for the first time on a Moonwatch, hacking seconds so you can set the time precisely. Omega also refined the case and bracelet (a more tapered bracelet that reduces the older model's top-heavy feel).
Hesalite vs. sapphire

- Hesalite (acrylic): the historically accurate "as-flown" choice, with a solid caseback. Warm vintage look; scratches buff out.
- Sapphire: scratch-resistant front crystal plus an exhibition caseback to view the 3861. A scratched sapphire must be professionally replaced (typically $150, $300).
Collector edge
If provenance purity is your priority, a Hesalite 1861 Moonwatch is the closest modern watch to the one certified for the Apollo program. If you want daily accuracy and the ability to hack, the sapphire-sandwich 3861 is the technically superior buy. Service-interval economics also favor the 3861 (longer recommended intervals).
Authentication & value

Authenticate the caseback engraving, caliber finishing, and dial fonts, see How to Authenticate an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. Box-and-papers and condition drive resale; see The Full-Set Premium.
The transition to the 3861 movement introduced more elaborate finishing and a significant step up in magnetic resistance, and these technical upgrades are now a primary driver of modern resale value. For the 1861, collectors should prioritize examples with an unblemished crystal and a case that retains its original transitions, as these physical details protect the investment long term.

Frequently asked
Questions, answered
Does the Speedmaster 3861 hack?
Yes, it's the first standard Moonwatch caliber with a stop-seconds (hacking) function.
Is the 1861 or 3861 better?
The 3861 is more accurate, anti-magnetic, and hacks; the 1861 is the longer-running, more "vintage-pure" movement. Neither is wrong, it depends on whether you prioritize technology or heritage.
Should I buy Hesalite or sapphire?
Hesalite for historical accuracy and a solid caseback; sapphire for scratch resistance and a view of the movement.
Is the 3861 Co-Axial worth the premium over the 1861?
The 3861 adds a Co-Axial escapement, Master Chronometer anti-magnetism, and a 50-hour reserve, plus a sapphire option. Purists still prize the hand-wound 1861 for its lineage and Hesalite charm.
Does the Hesalite or sapphire crystal hold value better?
Hesalite is the traditional Moonwatch choice and the cheaper service. Sapphire (Sapphire Sandwich) costs more new and shows the movement, but neither meaningfully out-appreciates the other; condition rules.
